dreaming of launching a business
Do you want to know the BEST advice we ever took in the early days of launching a business? One word, decisions. That’s it! It’s all in the decisions you make and often in the ones that you don’t. Let us explain it this way, the difference between clear decision-making and inaction feels like sitting in traffic when you’re already late versus sitting in traffic when you have plenty of time. Both reach the destination, but one feels twice as long and anxiety-ridden. Clear decisions are how you leave the house early so to speak on your business and in your life.
Here’s how we applied it; we decided together in our hotel room at a business conference over spicy ramen bowls and HGTV that we wanted to make hats…and then we didn’t decide on anything else for months.
We spent hours and hours stuck in an endless loop of discussions without decisions. We couldn’t decide on a name, then we couldn’t decide on colors, then we couldn’t decide on branding. You name it, we couldn’t decide on it, and rightfully so (we thought) as we wanted it to be perfect. Yet looking back, the reality of all of those decisions is no one else cares. Maybe the business name you are dreaming of has meaning to you or the colors are symbolic of something. Guess what we learned…no one cares. Do you shop at Target because of the name or the red? Would you still shop there if it were neither of those things, but all the same products and prices were inside? YES.
So take our advice, and make one decision today that brings you one step closer to your business getting off of the notes in your phone and into the world because, if we are honest with ourselves, its not the name or the colors that was holding us back, it is our deep-seated fears. Often a fear of failure, whatever that failure would feel like to you. When we realized that, we named the business Fear Not and moved on to the next decision that led us to where we are today.
“Every decision you make - every decision - is not a decision about what to do. It's a decision about who you are. When you see this, when you understand it, everything changes. You begin to see life in a new way.” - Neale Donald Walsch
What does your decision say about who you are? Ours tell us many things, and today they remind us that we can finally say we are business owners.
